How to Play Khmer Chess (Ouk Chaktrang)

Comprehensive specifications for board setup, initial special moves, piece movement vectors, and pawn promotion.

1. Board & Initial Piece Setup

Ouk Chaktrang is contested on an 8x8 grid. Unlike Western chess, pawns start advanced on row 3 (Light) and row 6 (Dark), resulting in immediate tactical engagement from the opening plies.

Light Formation: Row 1: Major pieces | Row 3: Eight Pawns (Trey)
Dark Formation: Row 8: Major pieces | Row 6: Eight Pawns (Trey)

2. Piece Movement Specifications

Ang (King)
ស្ដេច (Sdaach / Ang)
Moves 1 step in any of the 8 orthogonal or diagonal directions. The central piece whose capture defines checkmate.
Special Initial Leap: May leap like a Horse (Ses) on its first move if unmoved, empty, and not under check.
Neang (Queen / Seed)
នាង (Neang / Suda)
Moves 1 step diagonally in any of the 4 diagonal directions (identical to the promoted pawn).
Special Initial Advance: May move 2 squares straight forward on its very first move if the path is clear.
Koul (Noble / Bishop)
គោល (Koul)
Moves 1 step straight forward or 1 step in any of the 4 diagonal directions (5 directions total). Critical for close-range central combat.
Ses (Horse / Knight)
សេះ (Ses)
Leaps in an "L-shape" (2 steps in one orthogonal direction, then 1 step perpendicular). Can jump over intervening pieces.
Touk (Boat / Rook)
ទូក (Touk)
Moves any number of unoccupied squares orthogonally (horizontally or vertically). The primary attacking engine in endgames.
Trey (Fish / Pawn)
ត្រី (Trey → Trey Bompong)
Moves 1 step straight forward, captures 1 step diagonally forward. Automatically flips to Trey Bompong on the promotion rank.
Automatic Promotion: Promotes upon reaching row 6 (Light) or row 3 (Dark). Gains Neang diagonal movement.
Traditional Law

Endgame Counting Rules (ច្បាប់រាប់ស្មើ)

In Khmer chess, when a player is reduced to a lone King, they may invoke the ancient counting laws. If the attacker cannot deliver checkmate within the allotted moves, the game is declared an official draw.

Board Counts (Remaining Attacking Material)

Triggered when the defending King is alone and no unpromoted pawns (Trey) remain on the board. The total count begins from the total number of pieces remaining on both sides + 1.

Attacker's Strongest Piece Maximum Moves
At least one Touk (Boat/Rook) 16 Moves
No Touk, at least one Koul (Noble/Bishop) 44 Moves
No Touk or Koul, at least one Ses (Horse) 32 Moves
Only Neang / Promoted Pawns (Trey Bompong) 64 Moves

Exact Piece Counts (When Attacker Has Specific Pairs)

Applied when the attacker is reduced to specific piece configurations against a lone King:

Exact Attacking Army Total Move Budget
2 Touks (Two Boats) 8 Moves
1 Touk (Single Boat) 16 Moves
2 Kouls (Two Nobles) 22 Moves
2 Ses (Two Horses) 32 Moves
1 Koul (Single Noble) 44 Moves
1 Ses (Single Horse) 64 Moves
